All work and no play is not particularly good for us and finding a hobby that one can get immersed in is another aspect of life that will help keep us healthy and happy.
Whilst, for some, this may simply involve reading books or going to the movies, for others, hobbies that are more “hands on” are the order of the day.
With this in mind we explore some of the most interesting tech hobbies for big boys and girls.
Coding and Programming
Arguably, computer coding and programming comes top of the most geek chic hobbies around. This can, of course, take many forms including web and games design. JavaScript and other coding languages can be used in a myriad of scenarios and what may start as just a hobby could lead to a more serious interest in the area – there is great demand for those who are accomplished coders.
Robotics and Engineering
Anyone who has ever seen the hit TV show Robot Wars will understand just how popular engineering and robotics have become as a hobby. The idea of building a robot, no matter what its purpose, using sophisticated components and equipment, is to the many who undertake it, a childhood dream come true.
If it’s just an engineering project that appeals, however, restoring a vintage car or building a go kart for the kids may be a more attractive option.
Music and Video
Where once you would have needed a lot of expensive equipment to produce high quality music or videos, now anyone can do it. GarageBand, for example is free software that allows you to record and program music to a very high standard or add plugins to remove echo from your music. Even for those who don’t play a musical instrument, the results that can be achieved are amazing.
The same goes for video production. Shoot some footage using a mobile phone, upload it onto a computer and then choose form a range of free or reasonably priced video editing packages to add music, special effects and complete other post production processes.
The Internet of Things
Basic home automation processes, such as checking to see if windows have been left open can now be achieved relatively easily using sensors and a control device such as a Raspberry Pi. Once the basic principals have been learnt, increasingly complex functions can be undertaken – controlling the temperature of a home for example.
The need to partake in activities that promote mindfulness has been highlighted as being extremely important and getting involved with these types of tech hobbies is just the thing to focus and engage those who do so.
